Expectations for “Varanasi,” director S.S. Rajamouli’s upcoming film starring Mahesh Babu, continue to soar among movie lovers across India and abroad. Following the phenomenal success of RRR, the much-awaited project has generated immense excitement, with many believing it could redefine Indian cinema on the global stage.
The recently released teaser received an overwhelming response from audiences worldwide, further increasing anticipation for the film. Amid this excitement, Rajamouli has now shared a major production update. While he had earlier confirmed that the film would hit theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027, the ace filmmaker has now revealed that the shooting will be completed within the next four months.
Speaking to the media during the Annecy International Animation Festival in France, Rajamouli said that the major action sequences have already been completed and that the team is currently filming the remaining portions. According to him, the entire shoot is expected to be wrapped up by the first week of October, after which the focus will shift entirely to post-production, including visual effects and animation work.
Rajamouli also revealed that while the makers always believed Varanasi would be a spectacular experience in the IMAX format, the story was never altered specifically for IMAX. Instead, only a few technical adjustments were made to enhance the viewing experience.
Recently, Rajamouli’s father and renowned writer V. Vijayendra Prasad hinted that the film draws inspiration from episodes connected to the battle involving Lord Rama and Kumbhakarna from the Treta Yuga. He added that the story blends mythology with the present day, creating a unique narrative that connects ancient events with modern times.
The film stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role, with Priyanka Chopra playing the female lead. Prithviraj Sukumaran has reportedly been cast in the role of Kumbha, adding further star power to one of the most anticipated Indian films in production.
