The title of the upcoming Telugu film “Idupu Kayitham” has sparked intense debate on social media, with some users questioning its use of the Telangana dialect and regional terminology. Responding to the criticism, producer Bunny Vas made it clear that the film’s title will not be changed.
The film, which is rooted in Telangana culture, language, and traditions, has drawn comments from some viewers outside the region who claim they find the title difficult to understand. Some social media users even questioned whether a “Telugu version” of the film would be released, referring to the heavy use of the Telangana dialect.
Addressing the controversy, Bunny Vas said that a film’s title is chosen based on its story, characters, and narrative—not to cater separately to audiences from different regions.
“Every film is titled according to its story and characters. We don’t make separate films for audiences from Andhra Pradesh or Telangana. People will watch a movie if they like it. It is unfair to judge or criticise a film before watching it. This is not a story limited to Telangana alone, and I am confident audiences everywhere will connect with it,” he said.
The title “Idupu Kayitham” is a traditional Telangana expression referring to a divorce agreement. Historically, before the modern legal system became widely accessible, couples seeking to separate would often formalize their mutual decision through a written agreement in the presence of community elders. In Telangana, such a document was traditionally known as an Idupu Kayitham.
Supporters of the film argue that regional dialects and cultural expressions are an integral part of Telugu cinema and should be celebrated rather than criticised. They point out that every region has its own unique vocabulary and linguistic identity, and films often use authentic local language to strengthen storytelling.
With the debate continuing online, the makers remain firm that the title reflects the film’s theme and cultural backdrop, and have expressed confidence that audiences will appreciate the story once the movie is released.
