WhatsApp is set to roll out one of its biggest privacy updates yet, allowing users to connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers. The new Username feature, announced by Meta, is designed to give users greater control over their personal information while making it easier to communicate securely. The feature is expected to be released to all users in phases over the coming weeks.
With this update, users will be able to create a unique username and share it instead of their mobile number. This will be especially useful when contacting someone for the first time, joining communities, or interacting with people online without exposing personal contact details. According to Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s Vice President of Product, users will only need to share their username for new conversations, while existing privacy features such as Block, Silence Unknown Callers, and other safety tools will continue to function as before.
WhatsApp has also introduced specific rules for creating usernames. A username must be between 3 and 35 characters long and can include letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods (.) and underscores (_). Usernames cannot begin with “www” or end with domain extensions such as “.com” or “.net”. For additional security, users can optionally create a 4-digit PIN, which can be required along with the username before someone can initiate a conversation.
The platform is also making it easier for creators, influencers, and businesses to reserve usernames that match their existing Instagram or Facebook identities, helping them maintain a consistent online presence across Meta’s platforms.
The feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users. Those who have received the update can check its availability by opening WhatsApp Settings and looking for the Username option in their profile settings. Users who don’t see it yet are expected to receive the update in the coming days as Meta expands the rollout globally.
As the world’s most popular messaging platform, WhatsApp has long faced demands for stronger privacy protections. The introduction of usernames marks a significant step toward allowing users to communicate more safely while keeping their phone numbers private.
